Mieux comprendre et mieux traiter la douleur chez les aînés à l’aide des techniques de neurostimulation
La douleur chronique est une problématique de santé importante au Canada, affectant près d’un individu sur cinq. Cette situation, on s’en doute bien, ne s’améliore guère avec l’âge, avec plus d’une personne âgée sur deux rapportant des douleurs persistantes.Dans le cadre de ses travaux, le Pr Léonard s’intéresse à cette problématique importante. Sa programmation de recherche vise à mieux comprendre les mécanismes d'action des interventions analgésiques non-pharmacologiques et, de façon particulière, à documenter l'effet du vieillissement sur celles-ci. Le Pr Léonard s’intéresse particulièrement au potentiel des techniques de neurostimulation (neurostimulation périphérique, stimulation transcrânienne) comme avenues thérapeutiques pour diminuer les douleurs et maximiser la fonction physique des personnes âgées. Enfin, l’interaction entre la douleur et le système moteur constitue un autre champ d’intérêt important du Pr Léonard, alors qu’il tente de mieux cerner l’influence réciproque existant entre le système nociceptif et le système moteur chez le jeune adulte et la personne âgée.
